Real Madrid reveal £330m design for new Bernabeu stadium

Real Madrid have unveiled a £330m redesign plan they hope will turn their Santiago Bernabeu ground into the best stadium in the world.

German architects GMP's design won the international tender and work will begin at the end of the season.

A new exterior will be built that includes a retractable roof and is due to be completed by 2017.

"We want to make the Santiago Bernabeu the best stadium in the world," said Real Madrid President Florentino Perez.

"Our commitment is to continue increasing the heritage of our club, thus gain in economic strength, so we can continue to lead in an environment of increasing competition.

"We believe in a project that will enhance our image, brand and city that we also feel proud of."

Barcelona lost at home in the league for the first time since April 2012 as Valencia ended the league leaders' run of 25 successive wins at the Nou Camp.

Alexis Sanchez gave Barca the lead before Dani Parejo swept home and Pablo Piatti headed in for the visitors.

Lionel Messi made it 2-2 from the penalty spot after Ricardo Costa had handled, but Valencia grabbed a famous win when Paco Alcacer slotted in.

The La Liga champions were also reduced to 10 men when Jordi Alba was sent off.

The former Valencia player was dismissed for a body-check on Sofiane Feghouli 13 minutes from time.

Defeat was Barcelona's first at home in the league since a 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in April 2012.

"I would say to them [the Barcelona players that everything continues, that we may lose the leadership of the league, but that we will still continue to fight," said Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino.

"We will try to recover the lost ground on our title rivals. We conceded chances to Valencia and they took advantage of them. We need to keep going and keep in mind how much this hurt us today."

Barcelona remain top of the table on goal difference with 54 points, from Atletico Madrid, who play Real Sociedad on Sunday at 1800 GMT.

Real Madrid, who have won their last five league matches, are a point behind and are at Athletic Bilbao on Sunday (2000 GMT).

Cardiff came from behind to beat Norwich, picking up their first points under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and climbing off the bottom of the league table.

Robert Snodgrass gave Norwich an early lead from Martin Olsson's low cross.

But Cardiff scored two goals in as many minutes as Craig Bellamy slotted in debutant Wilfried Zaha's pass before fellow signing Kenwyne Jones tapped in.

Norwich struck the woodwork twice and Cardiff keeper David Marshall made three fine saves as the hosts held on.

Much of the credit for the victory must go to Solskjaer, who, despite losing his first three league games in charge, showed his willingness to make big calls in throwing on Zaha for the ineffective Peter Whittingham six minutes before the break.

With Jones, Bellamy and Craig Noone all pushing forward, suddenly the previously lacklustre hosts offered a threat from all angles and the two goals came in the midst of a spell of relentless pressure.

Although their team remain in the bottom three, Cardiff fans will have left the stadium with renewed optimism, having seen two of their new signings hit the ground running under a bright young manager who is not afraid to trust his instincts.

Norwich, meanwhile, will rue their misfortune after a result that sees them slip to 15th in the table with just one win in nine games.

Not only did they come up against an inspired opponent in the shape of their former keeper Marshall, they also had two goals disallowed for offside.

Cardiff's response was restricted to long-range efforts from Jordon Mutch and the impressive Noone, and Solskjaer reacted to a lack of bite by sending on former Crystal Palace winger Zaha.

The Manchester United loanee received a huge cheer when he entered the fray and rewarded the crowd's encouragement with a decisive intervention four minutes after half-time.

Drifting inside from the left flank, he spotted Bellamy's run and slid in a perfect through-ball, which the Welshman steered under John Ruddy.

Two minutes later, Norwich failed to clear a corner and when Mutch curled over a cross from the right, Jones hooked home at the second attempt.

There was no let-up in the tempo, with chances at both ends. Marshall tipped Bradley Johnson's long-range shot onto the bar before Jones almost added a third for Cardiff when Mutch's effort deflected off his body and onto the post.

Everton recovered from their Merseyside derby thrashing by Liverpool to beat Aston Villa thanks to Kevin Mirallas's superb 25-yard free-kick.

It looked like the hosts would suffer consecutive defeats after Villa defended Leandro Bacuna's first-half goal, their only shot on target.

But substitute Steven Naismith broke Villa's resistance with a 16-yard shot.

And Mirallas's curling strike five minutes from time moved Everton up to fifth in the Premier League table.Prior to this result, Villa had only lost three times away all season and their 3-5-2 formation, along with some brave defending, made it look like they would pinch victory.

But Roberto Martinez's decision to push up Leon Osman in support of lone striker Mirallas and introduce Naismith in the second half proved the difference.

With Tottenham drawing at Hull, Everton leapfrogged the north London side, whom they face a week on Sunday, and moved a point behind their Merseyside rivals as they continue their chase for a place in next season's Champions League.

And the manner in which Martinez continued to push for victory, despitelacking top scorer Romelu Lukaku, suggests they will press their challengers for the rest of the season.

Villa were happy to yield possession for long periods and, once they scored against the run of play, looked intent on simply defending their lead.

However, once Naismith had scored after 74 minutes, Villa boss Paul Lambert did try to go for a winner.

His side missed a chance to pull further away from the relegation zone but they stay 10th in the Premier League and are five points above the drop zone.

The visitors were close to going behind early on when Aiden McGeady, making his first Premier League start since signing from Spartak Moscow, cut in from the right and hit the far post with a curling shot.

Shane Long scored his first goal for Hull City as Steve Bruce's side held Champions League hopefuls Tottenham.

January signing Long curled home 12 minutes in after being put clear by strike partner Nikica Jelavic.

That was Hull's first league goal in 2014, and they almost added a second when Jelavic sent a free-kick wide.

Paulinho equalised for Spurs with a smart turn and shot, with Jelavic denied a late winner for Hull when his low drive was kept out by Hugo Lloris.Despite squandering that late chance, Hull - two points clear of the relegation zone - are likely to be the happier of the sides.

Their new front two of Long and Jelavic showed signs of a promising partnership that should possess the firepower to pull them away from danger.
